From the Principal. . .

Dear Phelps Luck Families,

We continue to focus on building positive relationships with our students to ensure an inclusive and nurturing environment.  Again this year, we are utilizing community circles to build community in our classrooms.  These circles are used daily to enrich the relationships between students and staff and to learn more about each other.  Be sure to ask your child what question was used for their circle!  This could be a great dinner time conversation topic.  You might also have your child teach you how to do a circle and use them at home!  These circles have had a very positive impact on our school!

Sincerely,
Michelle M. Leader
Principal

Important Reminder

If you have moved or plan to move, please notify the office of your new address. You will need to bring your new lease/deed and a current utility bill to the office in order for your child’s record to be updated.

Title I Information:

Title I is a federally funded program designed to ensure that all children have an opportunity to access a high-quality education. The goal of this federal program is to close the achievement gap for all students. There are two types of Title I programs: Targeted Assistance School programs and Schoolwide Title I programs.  Phelps Luck has a Schoolwide Title I program. Schools are identified and authorized to implement one of these programs based on the percentage of students receiving free and reduced-price meals (FARMs).  The Schoolwide program allows all students to be eligible for additional academic support. Federal funds are used to support and enhance the overall school program at Phelps Luck Elementary. These Title I funds may be used to upgrade the entire school’s educational program so that the overall education of ALL children who attend the school can be improved.  Currently, all Title I schools in Howard County operate as Schoolwide programs.  For more information about Title I, please visit the PLES or HCPSS Title I website. http://www.hcpss.org/academics/title-i-program/

Learning Night & Trunk-or-Treat!

Save the Date - Thursday, October 25th
Please join us on Thursday, October 25th for an evening of Reading, Math and fall fun from 6:00-8:00pm!  In order to be more inclusive of all families’ beliefs, we are very excited to announce that in place of a daytime costume parade and Halloween party, you will have the opportunity to trunk-or-treat in the school parking lot at the end of this event!  Students are invited to wear book character costumes to the Learning Night!  We ask that you leave masks and costume weapons at home.  If you wish to donate candy, please send in any bags of unopened candy to the front office.  Hope to see you there!  We will have Fall Fun activities during the day on Monday, November 5th.  Each grade-level team will communicate plans and activities with families prior to this date.

Candy for the Courageous

Please bring any extra unopened Halloween candy to school in a ziploc bag between November 1-5, 2018.  We will be giving the candy to the USO at BWI airport, so that they can give it to our troops before they travel  overseas.  Feel free to also write letters/cards to the troops, which will be given to our military.  We collected about 100 pounds of candy last year!  Let’s beat this record!

Falcon Newsletter

Our Falcon Newsletter is sent out via HCPSSNews and posted on the Phelps Luck Elementary website twice a month.  In order to save paper, and be green conscious, the October 25th newsletter will be the final issue sent home in paper form to every family.  If you would like to receive it via HCPSSNews, visit hcpss.org and sign up.  If you would like to continue to receive paper copies, please send back the green sheet that was sent home.
