From the Principal. . .

Dear Phelps Luck Families,

The week of November 25th is designated for Parent Teacher Conferences. Parent Teacher Conferences are a terrific opportunity for staff and parents to partner together for each child’s success. Beginning Monday, November 11th, you can log into HCPSS Connect to view and select from the time slots provided by the teacher for the conference. If you do not have access to HCPSS Connect, please call the school for assistance. Please see directions at the end of this newsletter.

November conferences will be with homeroom teachers. Please note, if your child has GT Math with Mrs. Fleck, you can sign up for a conference with her as well.

You will have access through Friday, November 22nd to schedule your child’s conference by logging into HCPSS Connect. We look forward to conferencing with you about your child’s progress!

Sincerely,
Michelle M. Leader
Principal

School News

Young Authors’ Contest 2019 - 2020

Original short stories and poems are sought from Phelps Luck students in grades 1-5 for the 2019-20 Young Authors’ Contest. The Howard County Reading Council sponsors the contest. High quality winning entries from each grade will move on to the county level competition. The deadline for the submission of typed entries is Monday, December 2, 2019. Call or email any classroom teacher or reading specialist, Tracy Jones, at tracy_jones@hcpss.org if you need clarification or have questions. Teachers also have contest announcements and the cover sheets that must accompany each entry.

Candy for the Courageous

Please bring any extra unopened Halloween candy to school in a ziploc bag between November 1-5, 2019. We will be giving the candy to the USO at BWI airport, so that they can give it to our troops before they travel overseas. Also, feel free to write letters/cards to the troops, which will be given to our military. We collected about 100 pounds of candy last year! Let’s beat this record!

From the Media Center

Attention Families of Fifth Graders! Registration for the Battle of the Books is now open and closes on November 4th.

Attention All Families! Mark your calendar for the Scholastic Book Fair coming to the Media Center on Monday and Tuesday, November 25th and 26th. The hours for sales are 1pm -8pm each day. Students and teachers will make wish lists during the week of 11/18-22. Here is your chance to add great books to your home libraries. This school fundraiser will also provide more books for our school library, as well!! Thanks and Always Keep Reading!

Are you the parent of a 5th Grader? You could also be a Battle of the Books Coach! Information has been given out about how to create teams and important dates, but if you need more information, please visit the HC Library website. If you have any questions, please feel free to email Mrs. Greene at
stephanie_greene@hcpss.org. It will be a great Battle in April!
